Well folks, here's a port of sox for the Arc. Thank my friend who gave me 80+ MB of music files in 2 channel, 20kHz .VOC files with horrible noise blips in them. I originally used sox via the PC Emulator, but this was a tad slow. Hence the port.
Sox proper is in the directory 'bin'. In directory 'cat1' is a man page suitable for use with the port of man by Alun Jones. Directory 'txt' contains a more readable version of the man page (Thanks to the powerful Search & Replace macros available in Zap). 'Setup' is the Obey file that sets up the file suffixes used by sox to be converted to directory names; ie.
sox sample.voc sample.wav
will use the file 'sample' in the directory 'voc', and output the file 'sample' in directory 'wav'. If the output file directory (in this case, 'wav') doesn't exist, it will be created. If you are already using other utilities that use UnixFS$sfix, you'll probably want to add the list in 'Setup' to your initial setup for UnixFS$sfix.
Read the file 'sox' in the directory 'txt' for more useful information on how to use sox. The files 'Cheat' and 'Tips' contain useful information on some of the more common uses of sox and how to get the best out of your converted samples.
Large input files will take some time, although this will depend on the data transfer of your storage device (funny that!). Believe me, it's a hell of a lot quicker than using the PC Emulator! (I think my grip on reality at that stage was non-existent!)
